Samsung unveiled its newest device during an event in New York’s Radio City Music Hall. The phone looks very similar to the Galaxy S3 but sports an improved screen, camera, and components, as well as oodles of quirky software features like language translation. As CNET noted yesterday, Samsung is making Apple’s iPhone look like yesterday’s hot smartphone.

Many Apple analysts today, though, remain confident that Apple will be able to maintain its strong position in the high end of the smartphone market. They noted that the updates were more evolutionary than revolutionary.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster called the Galaxy S4 “an incremental update akin to iPhone S models.” The updates largely were evolutionary, he noted, and while some of the software features are “unique,” the improvements are “minor compared with what Siri was to the iPhone 4S or even Google Now to Android.”

As a result, he expects Apple to maintain a low 40 percent share of the high-end market. JK Shin, head of Samsung’s mobile business and the company’s newly appointed co-CEO, told The Wall Street Journal that he’s not satisfied with Samsung’s market share in the U.S.

And Jefferies analyst Peter Misek said that while he was impressed overall with the device, he’s waiting “to see how the features perform in the real world and if they are actually used.” He added that a major complaint among Galaxy users is they don’t like Samsung’s customized software.

“We believe the S4 will certainly sell well and it is incrementally negative for Apple,” Misek said. “However, the device is not revolutionary, in our view. Aside from the large screen size, which we believe gives Samsung a large advantage over Apple, we believe many of the features can easily be replicated.”

Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu, meanwhile, said Apple supplier checks indicate Apple is cutting iPhone production plans as it prepares for a device refresh in the second half of the year. He also believes Apple is sourcing components for the iPhone 5S and a lower-cost iPhone.

However, Wu doesn’t expect Apple to release an iPhone with a bigger screen until 2014.

“We continue to believe AAPL is leaving money on the table by not participating in larger touchscreen form factors dominated by Android vendors,” he noted. “But more importantly, we believe AAPL needs to reclaim high-end leadership as that is what its brand is about.”

Apple shares grew 1.6 percent to $439.42 in early trading today. Samsung shares trading in Korea closed down 2.6 percent.

Canonical has presented Ubuntu’s tablet interface – the next step towards one unified family of experiences for personal computing on phones, tablets, PCs and TVs.

“Multi-tasking productivity meets elegance and rigorous security in our tablet experience,“ said Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu and Canonical. “Our family of interfaces now scales across all screens, so your phone can provide tablet, PC and TV experiences when you dock it. That’s unique to Ubuntu and it’s the future of personal computing.”

“Fashion industry friends say the Ubuntu phone and tablet are the most beautiful interfaces they’ve seen for touch” said Ivo Weevers, who leads the Canonical design team. “We’re inspired by the twin goals of style and usability, and working with developers who are motivated to create the best possible experience for friends, family and industry.”

The new tablet design doesn’t just raise the bar for elegant presentation, it breaks new ground in design and engineering, featuring:

Real multitasking: Uniquely, Ubuntu allows a phone app on the screen at the same time as a tablet app. The Ubuntu side stage was invented both to enable efficient multitasking and to improve the usability of phone apps on tablets.

On high end silicon, Ubuntu offers a full PC experience when the tablet is docked to a keyboard, with access to remote Windows applications over standard protocols from Microsoft, Citrix, VMware and Wyse. “An Ubuntu tablet is a secure thin client that can be managed with the same tools as any Ubuntu server or desktop,” said Stephane Verdy, who leads enterprise desktop and thin client products at Canonical. “We are delighted to support partners on touch and mobile thin clients for the enterprise market.”

Install Windows 7, XP, Vista from USB Drive

Making a bootable USB flash drive for Windows Vista and Windows 7 isn’t all that tricky, but it’s always nice to find an app that simplifies things. Not only does WinToFlash make the process about as easy as it can get, but it can also create Windows XP, Server 2003, and Server 2008 installers.

The default options make it easy to roll a silent Windows install, or you can flip the custom switch and specify the exact setup parameters you want to use.

The handy app also has one more trick up its sleeve: moving Windows Preinstall environments. PE discs can be extremely handy for troubleshooting and repairs, and being able to painlessly zap them over to a USB flash drive means not having to burn a new copy every time someone’s haggard old optical drive decides to chew up your CD.

WinToFlash is a free download and is totally portable. It’s an excellent tool to add to your USB-related utilities.

PS4 announcement

Following the announcement of Sony’s PlayStation 4 this month, more details are beginning to unfold before the console’s launch at the end of the year. The latest reveal is that every PlayStation 4 game will be available to download.

“PS4 will be similar to PS in that every game will be available as a digital download, and some will also be available as a disc,” said Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Worldwide Studios boss, in an interview with The Guardian.

Some games won’t be available by way of disk, which is a step-away from what gamers are used to.

According to Yoshida, The Witness will be a digital release because of “the flexibility of the digital distribution scheme”. Yoshida explained: “We can have more small games that might be free or available for a couple of dollars, or different services like free-to-play or subscription models”

“The Sony boss also hinted at a subscription service for games in the interview, a long-awaited feature in the gaming industry.

“As more and more services and contents become available digitally, we’ll have more of an option to create attractive packages,” said Yoshida. ”So hypothetically we can look at different models – like a cable TV company. We could have gold, silver or platinum levels of membership, something like that

The images looks like the user interface Sony showed at its recent event in New York City, and depict the user home page, which lists your friends, trophies, feed, and shared media as well as add-on content.

There’s also a profile page and a shared content page that shows how PS4 owners will share content with their friends. The screens also provide insight as to how the sharing process might work, including a Trim Video editing feature.

iPad 3 or iPad 4? Whats better?

iPad 3 vs iPad 3

iPad 3 vs iPad 3

iPad 3 vs iPad 4: What’s New?

The iPad 4 represents the first iPad that doesn’t have a big new feature added to the tablet. The iPad 2 debuted dual-facing cameras, which not only allowed the iPad to serve as a camera, but also opened the door to videoconferencing via FaceTime. And the iPad 3 brought the Retina Display to the iPad. The iPad 4 is more of an incremental upgrade over its predecessor.

A6X processor

If Apple still used the numbering system with the iPad, the newest version would probably be named iPad 3S. And the S would be for speed. The biggest difference between the iPad 3 and iPad 4 is a processor that produces twice the speed both with graphics and pure processing power.

Why the delay? Many thought the A6X might make its debut with the iPad 3, but Apple did not want to sacrifice any battery power in an iPad that already needed as much as possible to deliver the Retina Display. The A6X was delayed to make sure it was ready for mass consumption, including being energy efficient.

iPad 3 vs iPad 4: Screen

Both the iPad 3 and the iPad 4 come with Apple’s Retina display. Although “only” packing 264ppi, unlike the iPhone 5′s 326ppi, the iPad’s still have market-leading screens.

iPad 4

Upgraded Cameras

The back-facing camera is still a 5 MP iSight that has basic features like face detection, backside illumination, five-elements lens and hybrid IR filter. But the front-facing camera has been upgraded to provide 720p HD video and the ability to take 1.2 MP photos. And a key detail in the upgrade comes with the A6X processor, which has improved signal processing to help photos look sharper and take advantage of the Retina Display.

iPad 3 vs iPad 4: Battery

The iPad 4 comes with a battery that lasts up to 10 hours, but so does the iPad 3. Don’t think that this is a bad thing though, we noted in our iPad 3 review that despite the high-resolution retina display, the battery life was “more than acceptable.”

iPad 3 vs iPad 4: Price

With the announcement of the iPad 4, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the iPad 3 would be made cheaper. Apple has different ideas, with the plan seeming to be to phase out the 3rd gen iPad.

The iPad 4 comes in at the same price of the iPad 3, with the Wi-Fi only tablets coming in at £399($US499, AU$539) £479(US$599, AU$649) and £559(US$699, AU$759) for 16GB, 32GB and 64GB respectively. The aptly named Wi-Fi + Cellular versions cost a bit more, at £499(US$629, AU$679), £579(US$729, AU$789) and £659(US$829, AU$899) for the three storage options.

Lightning Connector

The iPad 4 also moves the iPad from the old 30-pin connector to the Lightning connector. And while this has been billed as much as a negative as a positive by a media that insists this will produce the need for all new accessories, it was certainly expected. The Lightning connector provides most of its advantage to smaller devices like the iPhone and iPod lineup, but in order to move to the new connector, Apple needed to move every device to it.

The new iPad will work fine with most cases designed for the iPad 3. The only exceptions would be any case that actually plugs into the 30-pin connector. The iPad 4 will also be perfectly compatible with any BlueTooth accessories, so the idea that the upgrade means everyone must upgrade all of their accessories is a misconception.

But if you do have accessories that must plug into the iPad, the change means you will either need to buy a new iPad 4-compatible accessory or the new 30-pin to Lightning Adapter, which is $29 at the Apple Store and will make your older accessories compatible with the iPad 4.

Insect Drives Robot to Track Down Smells

The robot has been used to characterise the silkmoth’s tracking behaviours and it is hoped that these can be applied to other autonomous robots so they can track down smells, and the subsequent sources, of environmental spills and leaks when fitted with highly sensitive sensors.

The results have been published 6 February, in IOP Publishing’s journalBioinspiration and Biomimetics.

The male silkmoth was chosen as the ‘driver’ of the robot due to its characteristic ‘mating dance’ when reacting to the sex pheromone of the female. Once the male is stimulated by the pheromone it exhibits a distinctive walking pattern: straight-line and zigzagged walking consisting of several turns followed by a loop of more than 360°.

Lead author of the research, Dr Noriyasu Ando, said: “The simple and robust odour tracking behaviour of the silkmoth allows us to analyse its neural mechanisms from the level of a single neuron to the moth’s overall behaviour. By creating an ‘artificial brain’ based on the knowledge of the silkmoth’s individual neurons and tracking behaviour, we hope to implement it into a mobile robot that will be equal to the insect-controlled robot developed in this study.”

The researchers, from the University of Tokyo, attached the silkmoth to a free-moving polystyrene ball at the front of the robot which was used for overall control, much like the ball in a computer mouse.

Two 40 millimetre fans were attached at the front to divert the pheromone-containing air to the on-board moth — the researchers believe the fans are comparable to the wings of the silkmoth that flap to generate air flow across its antennae.

A 1800 millimetre wind tunnel was used in the experiments; the pheromone and robot were placed at opposite ends. Fourteen silkmoths were used in the study and all of them were able to successfully guide the robot towards the source.

The researchers also introduced a turning bias to the experiments, changing the power of one of the robot’s two motors so it veered towards one side when moving. This put the silkmoth into an extraordinary situation and required it to adapt and change its behaviour.

“The best way to elicit adaptive behaviours of insects is to put them into extraordinary situations. The turning bias in our study is analogous to a situation in which we try to ride unbalanced bicycles. We need training to ride such bicycles smoothly but the silkmoth overcomes the situation with only simple and fast sensory-motor feedbacks,” said Dr Ando. It is important that the chemical sensors attached to a potential robot have a short response and processing time when tracking down odours continuously, which is why the researchers also investigated the effect of a time delay between the movement of the silkmoth and the response of the motor.

“Most chemical sensors, such as semiconductor sensors, have a slow recovery time and are not able to detect the temporal dynamics of odours as insects do. Our results will be an important indication for the selection of sensors and models when we apply the insect sensory-motor system to artificial systems,” continued Dr Ando

Have a Broken iPad Screen

Broken iPad Screen

The worst thing that can happen to you as an iPad owner is somehow damaging your iPad’s lovely screen. After all, you spent a small fortune on your sweet tech toy, and you want it to stay in good shape for years to come. If your iPad screen should get damaged, though, what should you do? iPad screen repair comes to mind, but it’s a complicated, multi-stepped process. The more difficult issue would be tackling water damaged iPad repair. If your screen is just broken, here’s what you ought to do.

Purchase a New iPad

The easiest solution–provided you have the cash–would simply be to skip the whole repair process and purchase a whole new iPad. Many people will likely not be able to go for this option, so just continue reading.

Return the iPad to Apple

Likely the most direct way to deal with this problem, taking the damaged iPad to your nearest Apple Store for a replacement seems to be a safe bet. However, there’s apparently no consistent policy from the company with regard to how to deal with a broken screen. Still, a good number of Apple users have reported positive experiences involving the company and its replacement of their broken iPads. Some people have been able to get their iPads completely replaced when they brought in their damaged iPad to an Apple Store. Success is not always guaranteed, though, as some people have reported that staff at some Apple Stores turned them down.

There’s Always the 3rd-Party Repair Shop

If an Apple Store isn’t being compliant with your request, then try seeing if a 3rd-party repair shop will be any better. Due to the fact that a broken screen is actually a common problem, it should not be too difficult to locate a 3rd-party shop that can help you out. Prior to trusting your iPad to a total stranger, you should do a bit of research. For instance, find out if the 3rd-party repair shop is really an Apple Authorized Service Provider. It’s also a great idea to always obtain an estimate before any work starts. If you want to save some cash, a drop-off shop may even be best.

Take Care of It Yourself

This is the least popular option. You can buy an OEM digital screen for just under a hundred dollars, and this is the cheapest route to go. While you do have to be somewhat tech-minded, all it takes is some simple tools and maybe an hour or so. This is risky, though, if you don’t have any prior experience with fumbling around with tech gadgets.

These are four good suggestions on what to do if you’re in need of broken iPad screen repair. Repairing a broken iPad screen is something that can be handled by Apple, by a 3rd-party store or by the consumer. The most important thing is that you get a functional screen again, so that you can surf the web, check e-mail and have peace of mind.

Apple Overtakes Nokia in Mobile Web Usage

The findings come from Web analytics firm StatCounter, which saw Apple dethrone Nokia in January for the first time ever as the once-dominant vendor’s marketshare dropped over 15 percent year-over-year. It should be noted that tablet computers like the iPad were not counted in the study, though Apple’s iPod touch and other portable devices were included.

Nokia Logo

While a majority of top ten vendors saw declines over 2012, including Apple’s net loss from 28.67 percent to 25.86 percent at the end of last month, Nokia suffered the greatest drop-off, slipping from 37.67 percent of the market to 22.15 percent. Of the top three vendors, Samsung showed the only 12-month gain, rising from 14.84 percent to 22.69 percent over the same period. The performance was enough to see the Korean company squeeze past Nokia to retain the number two spot overall.

“It’s good and bad news for Apple,” said StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen. “Apple has been handed the number one spot despite its falling usage share. A decline in Nokia usage from January 2012 to January 2013 means the Finnish company ceded the top spot to Apple. Samsung, in contrast to Apple, has seen an increase in its usage share since January 2012.”

The analytics company’s research arm, StatCounter Global Stats, compiled the data based on over 15 billion page views per month to the StatCounter network of more than three million websites.

It was reported at the end of January that Apple’s iPhone accounted for 25.1 percent of all smartphones worldwide as shipments rose 46.9 percent to 136.8 million units in 2012, up from 93.1 million in 2011.
